How much is a vintage Blancpain worth?

Blancpain models from the 1950s-1980s are enjoying a remarkable rise in value. A vintage chronograph in excellent condition can fetch up to €35,000 at auction, while a piece in need of restoration can be bought for around €4,000.

The rarity of the model, its authenticity and the presence of original documents significantly determine its value. Gold timepieces with original bracelets are particularly popular with enthusiasts.

The first military Fifty Fathoms editions represent the pinnacle for enthusiasts, with record bids regularly exceeding €80,000. A trend that confirms the growing appeal of these witnesses to Swiss watchmaking history.

Vintage Fifty Fathoms and Bathyscaphe models

The Fifty Fathoms, created in 1953, remains an absolute reference in the world of diving watches. Its water-resistant case to 300 meters and unidirectional bezel make it a recognized professional instrument. On the second-hand market, prices range from €8,500 to €15,000, depending on condition and model.

The Bathyscaphe, launched in 1956, features a more compact, urban design. Its automatic caliber 1315 offers an impressive 120-hour power reserve. Used versions in black ceramic are particularly sought-after, with recent models selling for around €7,900.

Both collections stand out for their chronometric precision and rugged robustness, essential qualities for modern diving enthusiasts.

Price of a pre-owned Blancpain x Swatch

On the pre-owned market, the Blancpain x Swatch collaboration is a remarkable success. Launched at €390 in stores, these watches now fetch prices ranging from €450 to €800 for the most popular models, such as the Ocean Arctic or Atlantic Ocean.

The latest “Ocean of Storms” edition, released in January 2024, is already commanding prices in excess of €500 on specialist platforms. A phenomenon reminiscent of the success of the MoonSwatch.

Valuation factors are based on the presence of the complete set (box, papers, warranty), general condition and the relative rarity of certain colors. Optimal preservation of the original plastic protections can increase the price by 20% to 30%.

The Villeret collection: timeless elegance

"Villeret" is another very much sought-after Blancpain collection. With their classic design, Blancpain Villeret watches are very elegant and chic. They also reach a rather high value on the market : for example, a Blancpain Villeret Quantieme Calendar 6654 which will be found around $11,000. "Villeret" is the name of the Swiss town where Blancpain company were founded.  Paying homage to the brand's historic birthplace, the Villeret collection perpetuates Jehan-Jacques Blancpain's watchmaking excellence. Sleek rose gold or platinum cases sublimate dials with refined finishes.

Enthusiasts particularly appreciate models equipped with the moon-phase complication, a true Blancpain signature. On the French market, pre-owned versions in gold range from €12,000 to €25,000, while steel models start at €6,500.

The collection offers something for every wrist, from perpetual calendars and split-seconds chronographs to ultra-flat versions. The grand feu enamel dials and blued steel hands bear witness to exceptional craftsmanship.

Leman and Aqualung: expert series

The Leman series seduces enthusiasts with its characteristic double-apple case and sapphire crystal caseback revealing the automatic movement. The Aqualung models, particularly sought-after on the collector's market, feature a unique signature with their large date window.

The caliber 6950 that powers these timepieces offers a generous 70-hour power reserve. A major asset for discerning collectors who appreciate its legendary reliability. These timepieces retain their value remarkably well, with prices ranging from €9,500 to €16,000 depending on their condition.

The limited series of 2005, created to celebrate the 270th anniversary of the Manufacture, remains the most sought-after. Its deep black dial and luminescent hour-markers give it a uniquely sporty elegance.

Caring for your Blancpain automatic watch

The longevity of a Blancpain automatic watch requires special attention. Regular cleaning with a soft cloth preserves the shine of the metal and prevents the accumulation of dust.

To maintain its chronometric precision, a complete overhaul is necessary every 5 years at an authorized center. This includes complete dismantling of the mechanism, replacement of seals and lubrication of components.

Between overhauls, a few simple gestures will prolong its life: avoid strong magnetic fields, protect the winding crown from shocks and store the watch in a suitable case when not in use. Monthly winding keeps the oils flowing and the mechanism running smoothly.

Flyback: an exceptional complication

The Flyback function is one of the most sophisticated complications in Haute Horlogerie. This technical feat enables the chronograph to be instantly reset to zero without first stopping it. A simple press of the push-button is all that's needed to immediately restart the chronograph.

Originally developed for military pilots in the 1950s, this innovation guaranteed precise measurement of flight and navigation times. Blancpain models equipped with the F185 caliber particularly excel in this function, with a remarkably responsive mechanism.

On the collector's market, vintage Flyback chronographs sell for between €6,500 and €11,000, depending on their state of preservation and rarity.
